PARENT TIPS

Swim Suits

The girls can practice in any suit they wish, including suits from summer or club swim teams. For meets they need to wear their SME team suit.  Some swimmers may elect to buy serious competition suits for the league and state meets. These are optional, but if you think your swimmer may want one, plan on the expense now. We plan to have a team site where parents can select and pay for their daughter's suits/caps/equipment directly.  Our goal is to have team suits/caps distributed before our first meet on March 21st.

Team Dinners

Senior and Junior parents are hosts for team dinners. Every family is requested to sign up to help with one dinner. You can sign up to bring items through the website LadyLancer.swimtopia.com click on the small arrow on the right hand side of the Calendar/Volunteer Sign Up. The dinners are held after varsity practice ends (usually no one goes home to change). You will receive reminders about the team dinners via email. These are meant to be carb- loaded dinners for the girls. All swimmers and divers are invited to the dinners.

Meets

Dual meets usually last 2 to 2 1/2 hours. Invitational meets can last three of more hours. It is usually hot and humid in the pool area, so you will want to wear cool, comfortable clothes. Pack light snacks for your swimmer/diver as not all meets will have concessions available. A water bottle is a must! Some meets will charge a fee for spectators; we will try to let you know if there will be an admission fee.

Wear your Columbia Blue to meets! We will sit in a block to support our athletes. Bring a pen and a highlighter if you like to keep track of the meet on the heat sheet, which lists events and participants by heat. Sometimes the heat sheets are sold for $1-$5 so be sure to bring some cash. The locations of the meets will be given in the weekly email as well as listed on the website. Always double-check locations on the Sunflower League calendar, which has the most up-to-date information.

Timers

Parents are timers at our home meets. Please sign up to help time at the meets. You will definitely get wet, so dress accordingly. Senior parents do not time on senior night, so we will need extra help for that meet.

Senior Night

This will be held on our last home meet. Senior swimmers and divers are honored and a list of the athlete's accomplishments in the pool and activities in high school are recognized. Senior Night will be April 12, 2018.

E-mail Updates

Thank you for registering on our team website https://ladylancers.swimtopia.com. The website will contain weekly practice and meet schedules, team dinner information, and anything else pertinent to the week.

Qualifying for State

Kansas State Qualifying standards are posted on our website, and we will have pocket-sized standards for reference during the season. The standards are also available on the KSHSAA website. Divers qualify based on points for either 6- or 11-dive meets. Swimmers qualify based on times in each event. These qualifying standards may be met anytime throughout the season. Consideration times are also published; these are times for which the swimmer will be considered by KSHSAA to swim at the State meet. There will be a minimum of 24 swimmers per event and the events will be filled to heats of 8 in order of the fastest consideration times around the state.

State Meet

Every swimmer and diver is welcome and encouraged to attend the State meet. SME always has a big cheering section, so be prepared to be at the pool well before the published start time of the meet! As with all meets, wear your Columbia Blue!

Swim and Dive Banquet

The junior parents host a banquet to honor all swimmers, divers, and coaches. Invitations are sent and reservations made by purchasing meals in advance for everyone attending. You will also have the opportunity to contribute to a gift for the coaches at this time. The attire is business casual for all who attend. Individual attention is given to every swimmer and diver, so the banquet is always rather long, but it is a fantastic cap to our season! This year’s banquet is Tuesday, May 22, 2018.

Budgeting

Your expenses for the season may include photos from picture day, food for any team dinner you help with, swim suit and caps, spirit wear, and the end-of-season banquet tickets and gifts. A team t-shirt is provided to every swimmer/diver.  If your daughter qualifies for State, additional expenses may include travel expenses for your family (the school pays for athlete travel expenses) and a state gift for your athlete.

Questions

Any of the "seasoned" parents will be happy to answer questions. You may also contact Martha Linscott at rmlinscott@yahoo.com or Heather Kimmel at hkimmel1@me.com if you have specific questions or need more information.
